Watchdog tells BAA to sell airports

Competition Commission proposing BAA sells two of its London airportsCompetition chiefs have signalled the break-up of BAA's UK airport empire by proposing the company cease running two of its three London airports - Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.

The Competition Commission (CC) also recommended that Spanish-owned BAA lose control of either Edinburgh or Glasgow airport.

Michael Gove revealed last year 23,500 pupils were not entered for GCSEAlmost two million teenagers have left school without gaining a single good GCSE, it has been claimed.

Figures released by the Tories show that 1.75 million children left school without one GCSE at grade C or above between 1997 and 2007. In the same time frame, over 380,000 left without achieving a pass at grades A* to G. Last year, almost 153,000 pupils left without gaining a single C.

A Lords committee has urged reform the VAT systemVAT rates should be reformed to make sustainable consumer goods "more economically attractive" as part of a bid to end the UK's throwaway culture, a Lords committee has suggested.

The House of Lords Science Committee said variable VAT rates should be introduced to encourage products which are long-lived or can be easily repaired rather than replaced, and to promote repairs services.
